Google Chrome hides a small runner game behind its “no internet” page, and most people only ever find it by accident. The catch is obvious: you have to lose your connection to play it. So we built Gulch Runner, an original game in the same spirit that runs right here, free, with no install and no signup. Jump cacti, duck birds, and chase your best distance. It also works if you do drop offline later.
Play Gulch Runner now
Tap, click, or press Space to start running. Best played with sound on, though it starts muted.
How to play
You steer a small fox across a desert gulch that speeds up the longer you survive. Press Space or Up to jump, and hold Down to duck under birds. On a phone, tap the top of the game to jump, then hold the lower part or swipe down to duck. Two on-screen buttons do the same job.
Acorns hang in the air along each jump arc, and a chain of them scores extra. Collect eight and you earn a shield that absorbs one hit. A faint flag marks your best distance so you can see exactly where to beat it.
The Daily run uses a course seeded from today’s date, so everyone gets the same obstacles, and reaching 200 m keeps your streak going. Free run gives you a new course every time. Your best scores and streak are saved on your device, and nothing leaves your browser.
How it compares to the Chrome offline game
The original is a masterclass in one-button design: jump, duck, survive, repeat. Gulch Runner keeps that loop and the short rounds, and it keeps the part that matters most, which is that every death feels like your own mistake. We checked that by testing every daily course for the next month with an automated player. Each obstacle pattern can be cleared at the speed it appears, with room to spare.
What we changed is deliberate. The character, the art, the sounds, and the code are all ours, and the course adds a day and night cycle, acorn chains, a shield, and the daily seed. We did not copy Google’s code or assets, and we do not claim this is the same game.
What we left out is the surprise. The Chrome version is a secret you stumble into at the worst moment, and that charm is hard to bottle. If you like the idea of an Easter egg waiting inside your browser, the real thing is worth knowing about.

The offline game lives inside Google Chrome itself, so there is nothing separate to install. If you are curious about the browser or want to compare it with options that collect less data, we put together a list of the best Google Chrome alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play the Chrome dinosaur game online without going offline?
Yes, with a game inspired by it. Gulch Runner on this page is a free browser game in the same one-button style, so you can play any time without disconnecting. The original still appears only when Chrome has no connection, or when you open its built-in game page directly.
Is this the real Chrome game?
No. Gulch Runner is an original game we built, inspired by the offline runner Easter egg. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Google, and it uses none of Google’s code or assets. The download links above point to the official app.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, the game makes no further network requests, so it keeps running if your connection drops. Reload while offline and the page itself will need a connection again, unless your browser has cached it.
Is it free?
Completely. No ads, no purchases, no account, and no tracking. Your scores and streak sit in your browser’s local storage and are never sent anywhere.
Can the course be unfair or impossible?
Not by design. Every obstacle pattern is generated with a guaranteed safe window for jumping or ducking, and the spacing between patterns leaves time to land and react. If you hit something, the timing was yours to fix.
