1. Dirac Live – Best for whole-system correction on a supported AVR

Dirac Live is the reference for whole-system room correction outside the pro market. The app plays swept sines through your speakers, records nine to seventeen listening positions with a UMIK-1 or an OEM mic, then uploads a corrected filter to your AVR or preamp. The Full Frequency license covers the entire audible range; Bass Control adds multi-subwoofer time alignment on top.

Where it falls short: it only works on receivers and preamps that ship a Dirac Live license slot. The list is expanding (Denon, Marantz, NAD, Emotiva, McIntosh, MiniDSP, Onkyo, Pioneer) but excludes lower-end soundbars and every Yamaha AVR.

2. Room EQ Wizard – Best free measurement tool

Room EQ Wizard, universally known as REW, is a Java desktop app that measures your room in real time. The measurement view shows frequency response, waterfall decay, group delay, and RT60 side by side. Every serious room correction workflow starts here, even the paid ones. REW’s exported measurements load directly into MSO, Roon, and most parametric EQ hardware.

Where it falls short: REW does not process audio itself. It measures and diagnoses, and hands the filter you need over to another tool for playback.

3. Sonarworks SoundID Reference – Best for studio monitors and headphones

Sonarworks SoundID Reference for headphones and monitors targets producers who need one truthful sound across many rooms. The app takes a sweep with the included MEMS microphone, builds a per-room profile, and loads it as a system-wide EQ or a DAW plugin. The headphone side ships pre-measured profiles for hundreds of models.

Where it falls short: the monitor calibration takes 30 to 40 minutes and only compensates for the position you measure from. Move the chair a foot and the correction is off.

Bottom line: the answer for headphone mixers and small studios. Overkill for a living-room system.

4. Audyssey MultEQ Editor – Best for Denon and Marantz AVRs

Audyssey MultEQ Editor for desktop unlocks fine control over the auto-calibration that ships in Denon and Marantz AVRs. Denon’s baked-in Audyssey uses a target curve you cannot change; the paid Editor app lets you draw your own target, limit the correction frequency range, and pull individual speaker fixes back if the auto sweep over-corrected.

Where it falls short: it is more polished on iOS and Android than on Windows or macOS, and the desktop wrappers depend on the mobile app being present on your network.

5. Anthem ARC Genesis – Best for Anthem gear

Anthem ARC Genesis ships free with every Anthem AVR and MRX preamp. The workflow is close to Dirac’s, but ARC Genesis is tuned specifically for Anthem’s DSP and includes room-mode targeting that most consumer tools skip. The app runs on a laptop; you plug the ARC mic into USB, walk around the couch, and upload the filter over Ethernet.

Where it falls short: it only helps if you already own Anthem hardware. The mic is proprietary and only works with ARC.

6. Multi-Sub Optimizer – Best for two, three, and four subwoofer setups

Multi-Sub Optimizer, or MSO, solves the specific problem of aligning multiple subwoofers so their outputs sum evenly across a whole room instead of piling up in one spot. You feed it REW measurements from every seat, and it spits back the delay, gain, and PEQ per subwoofer that flatten the sum. The result is a couch where every seat gets the same bass, not the good seat and the bad seat.

Where it falls short: the UI is a wall of tabs. There is a real learning curve, and Andy C.’s tutorial videos are essentially required viewing.

Bottom line: if you have more than one sub, MSO is not optional. It is the only tool that solves the problem properly.

7. Trinnov Optimizer – Best for pro rooms

Trinnov Optimizer is the correction engine that ships in Trinnov’s Altitude and Amethyst hardware. It corrects amplitude, phase, and time in one pass, uses a four-capsule 3D microphone, and remaps speakers to their optimal positions if you cannot move them. It is what most Atmos-certified rooms and high-end cinema installs run.

Where it falls short: it lives inside the Trinnov hardware, so the cost of the app is the cost of the box. Entry starts around $5,000 for the Amethyst.

Bottom line: the correct answer if the room is a dedicated theater and the budget is a real one.

8. Roon – Best for streaming with per-zone parametric EQ

Roon is a music playback and library manager whose per-zone DSP engine lets you drop a parametric EQ curve on any zone, use REW’s filter export directly, and switch between corrected and uncorrected output on the fly. It is the friendliest way to run a correction filter on any streaming source you play through a computer.

Where it falls short: Roon is a paid subscription and a full library manager. Buying it just for room correction is expensive.

How to pick the right one

Start with REW no matter what. Every other tool works better once you know what the room actually looks like.

If the AVR supports it: Dirac Live. Full stop, this is the target most other paths are trying to approximate.

If Anthem hardware is in the rack: Anthem ARC Genesis. It ships free, it is very good, and there is no reason to pay for another tool on top.

For a Denon or Marantz AVR without Dirac: Audyssey MultEQ Editor. Twenty dollars to fix what came out of the box.

For studio monitors or a mixing chair: Sonarworks SoundID Reference.

For two or more subwoofers: Multi-Sub Optimizer. Nothing else touches the sum problem correctly.

For a dedicated theater build: Trinnov Optimizer.

For a streaming-first PC setup already on Roon: Roon with a REW-derived PEQ filter.

FAQ

Do I need a measurement microphone?
Yes. A UMIK-1 or a Sonarworks reference mic is the minimum. Phone microphones are not accurate enough for the low end where room problems live, no matter what the app promises.

Can I fix my soundbar’s sound with a room correction app?
Partially. If the soundbar exposes an EQ profile you can load, yes. If it does not, room correction changes what you feed it, and the soundbar still applies its own DSP on top. A supporting AVR beats a soundbar for correction every time.

Is Dirac Live better than Audyssey?
Yes, in general, but Audyssey MultEQ Editor closes most of the gap for a fraction of the price if you already own the Denon or Marantz hardware. Dirac is easier to like out of the box.

What is a “target curve,” and why does it matter?
A target curve is the frequency response you want the room to sound like, not a flat line. Most rooms sound best with a gentle downward slope from bass to treble, a shape known as the Harman curve or a “house curve.” Every tool worth using lets you edit this.

Does room correction hurt sound quality?
Only if the target curve is set wrong or the correction is too aggressive. Every serious app includes a defeat switch so you can bypass it in one click and hear the raw signal for comparison.

Do I need to redo the calibration when I move furniture?
Yes. A new couch, thicker curtains, or a bookshelf moved to a different wall changes the room’s response noticeably. Plan on a re-measurement any time the room changes meaningfully.
